Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and the entire month is observed as a time of blessing. It was during this month that the Qur'an was revealed to the prophet Muhammad. Its significance to Islam is reflected in its being one of the five pillars of Islam. The date of Ramadan changes each year, due to the Islamic calendar being lunar-based. Ramadan is observed by fasting during daylight hours; reading the Qur'an and praying more. After sunset, friends and family gather to eat a meal called the iftar, which consists of a variety of delectable foods. Another meal, the suhur, is eaten before sunrise.
