Plants play a vital role in the ecology of our planet by reducing carbon dioxide levels. As part of photosynthesis, they release oxygen as a waste product. Plants are hailed for their multi-faceted benefits, such as reducing levels of certain pollutants and dust, keeping air temperature lower, increasing humidity, and improving one's mental state. In addition to all of the proven scientific benefits that plants have, they also hold aesthetic significance, by giving our eyes something pleasant upon which to gaze.
In ancient Greek mythology, Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and the harvest goddess Demeter. She was abducted by the god of the underworld, Hades, but was allowed to return above ground for part of the year. The growing cycle of plants is reflected in this story: when Persephone is underground, plants' growth cycle comes to an end, but when she returns above ground, so begins a new growth cycle, and we experience spring.
